I met a guy on vacation with his family 15 years ago who owned a gym in Texas. We got talking and I told him I also owned 4 gyms up in Canada. It was the last day of his week-long vacation and he asked me if had just arrived.

I told him I had been staying at this resort for the last month.

Intrigued, he asked me if I was afraid that business back home would drop in profit in my absence.

I said “no, not at all, in fact I had a meeting with my manager on Monday and it’s one of the best months I’ve had this year”.

Now he was even more intrigued. He told me that it was the first vacation in 4 years and that he spent half the week wondering if things are going wrong.

As we walked from the beach to the pool bar he asked me how I did it. I told him I had systems in place, a dashboard for results and most great people running them for me.

I could feel his thirst to understand so I signalled the bartender to hand me a napkin and a pen.

I told him to write down the 5 most important items he does in a day. I then asked him to make 2 columns. I told him to rate each item from 1–5 on “how much he needed to do that work” and “how much he loved doing that work.”

So he wrote them down with the scores beside them.

Then he asked me what I thought.

I told him it could be better.

He then said: What does your day look like then?

So I took the pen and crossed off every item but one.

Leading my team.

Leadership success isn’t measured in the amount of time you work. It’s measured in the important decisions you make. A leader needs mental space to make great decisions.
